My Rating: 6.5/10

Plot/ Story line:

It’s a rather sweet romance story with a sprinkle of fantasy. When I mean ‘rather’, I really mean ‘rather’. To be frank, I expected quite a lot from this film because I thought the overview of the story is interesting. I mean, it’s about how appearances don’t really matter in love and even the ugliest person can be the most popular person. But in the end, the ending was really a disappointment to me. I really expected a more dramatic ending. And I didn’t really buy the fact that Johnny and Penelope fell in love so quickly. But, yeah, I have to agree it was rather sweet overall. There were many scenes that were really sweet and really could have been more dramatic with sounds effects or with the scene or even the way they filmed it. For example, when Johnny said that (SPOILER FROM HERE) he could not help her because he faked his identity, I was like, “OH! So that’s the reason why you said ‘I can’t’ to her!” Unfortunately, that whole scene was filmed so ‘normally’ and the actors acted it out as though it was nothing though-provoking, so the whole scene just passed by just like that. Seriously, could have been better.

It was rather unbelievable that the curse was broken as well. And I was also surprised that ‘one of her kind’ actually refers to family! Not some stupid blue-blooded guy. (SPOILER ENDS HERE) Oh well, it’s a fantasy theme anyway, and I really kind of like how they weaved in the family theme into the story. So overall, I enjoyed the movie, but it seriously could have been better! I gave the extra half mark because I really think it’s quite sweet.

By the way, CHILDREN SHOULD NOT LEARN FROM JOHNNY’S OLD GAMBLING WAYS! I hope responsible parents will make sure of that. AND, I really don’t understand the very last scene why Lemon didn’t take their photo? And please la, which journalist rows a boat in a lake with a camera? Shouldn’t that be what a camera man does? Anyway, this part didn’t affect the story.

Screen and Sound Effects:

Screen effects are not too bad, because some of the scenes were pleasant and very country and city like. It fit the story very well. I especially love the park at the last scene. I didn’t really take note of the sound effects, perhaps because it wasn’t really very nice to hear anyway. Sorry, no offense okay, this is purely my opinion.

Characters:

I love Penelope’s character. Her sheer determination to not just marry any blue-blooded man and her accepting the way she is is A FANTASTIC ATTITUDE THAT EVERY GIRL SHOULD HAVE. Just accept who you are, girls! Don’t be worried whether you have an ugly face or whether you have too skinny or too fat limbs. Everyone’s unique in their own special way. And if you love yourself and behave like yourself, your uniqueness will make you stand out from anyone else. I really admired her how she dared to run away from home (or more like prison) to live independently so that she can do whatever she wants. I was so happy for her when she finally made friends who saw past her pig-like nose.

Jessica Wilhern, I think she is really terrible. I know she love her daughter, Penelope, BUT PLEASE! YOU ARE TRAPPING HER FROM SEEING THE BEAUTIFUL WORLD OUTSIDE! She may look ugly, but she’s a wonderful sweet girl! Why can’t you EVER see past her ugly nose? I just couldn’t believe she could still say things like go for a nose job to make her nose more pointed after Penelope went through that change. I still remember Penelope just glared at her and said, “You’re crazy.” Damn right you are.

Most memorable line/ scene:

Johnny: All Halloween I've been running into someone I used to know.
Penelope: [wearing a pig mask] This someone - she meant a lot to you?
Johnny: Yes, yes she did.
Penelope: What happened?
Johnny: I couldn't give her what she wanted.
Penelope: What did she want?
Johnny: To be free.

Super sweet! I smiled at this scene.

“I can’t” – Johnny, who was pretending to be Max, said to Penelope when Penelope bravely asked him to marry her.

At first, I was like, what a jerk. Then after I realise the truth, I felt bad about it. Haha!

I would recommend it to:

Romance lovers or even a group of girls just trying to find a romance movie to watch together. It’s not THAT bad, but perhaps, I’m not saying you shouldn’t, you should rent the movie instead of buying the DVD or VCD. If you can afford it, then buy the DVD or VCD. If you can’t or you are rather short of cash for that moment, then don’t bother.
