Rating: 7/10
Plot/ Story line: To be very frank, this movie was loads of fun. It was really entertaining and interesting to see how the producers actually pieced the numerous evergreen ABBA songs and fit them into the plot of this movie, songs such as ‘Mamma Mia’ (like of course), ‘Money Money Money’, ‘Take a Chance on me’, ‘Honey Honey’, ‘I have a dream’, ‘Winner takes it all’, ‘Dancing Queen’ and so many more were played during the movie. As a fan of Disney Classics and Productions, I naturally love musicals as well, and it brought a smile to my face when some of these songs blended nicely into the plot of the movie. However, there was once (or was it twice) that I sort of frowned because I was thinking, “Huh?? The song has no link to the plot!” I mean, sometimes I felt that it was as though the producers were kind of forcing the music into the movie and it didn’t really blend very well. But my parents (I watched it with them) disagreed with me. So, I don’t know about you, but this was what I felt at certain scenes.
To add on, the overall story line was rather sweet and nice, a little bit of romance here and there. And this movie is like a good ‘essay’, in a way, because the introduction and the ending has a link! Haha! But I felt the relationship between Sophie and Sky could have been made clearer, because I was really puzzled as to (SPOILER) why they didn’t get married in the end, because they can still travel around the world when they are married, so why must the wedding be called off?? I just didn’t get it!
Anyway, this movie is also rather ‘vulgar’ in a way (from an immature kid’s point of view) and it is really more for adults, there were a number of sexual references in the movie, but well, it was fun to watch and I had a good laugh.
Oh and by the way, since it’s a musical, be prepared to see a whole crowd of people dancing and singing together. It’s just like Disney Classics musicals, just that this time is in real life and no animals are singing. Haha! AND not to forget, in some of the scenes, THE COSTUMES ARE RETRO! So it was ultra cool and funny to see actors like Pierce Brosnan wearing such clothings! Haha!
Screen and Sound Effects: The scenery was GREAT. I mean, I love the country side, so the wide open sea and the warm beaches were pleasing to my eyes. The singing was overall not bad, though there were a few songs that were personally sun by the actors and actresses that I didn’t feel was up to standard. But I really felt the song ‘Winner takes it all’ was really well sung as a lot of emotions gushed out of it and I was overwhelmed. And of course, if you happen to really enjoy ABBA’s works, you will like the sound effects and the music.
Characters: Sophie’s just so spontaneous and I really like her cheerfulness and sunshine character. No wonder Sky fell for her, please la, I wouldn’t be surprise if there were actually more guys who fell in love with her and Sky had to fight for her heart. No no, no such thing happened in the movie, it’s just what I imagine it to be IF this was a real life story. LOL.
Donna is DAMN WILD AND FUNNY. She’s like this super strong woman who loves her girlfriends and loves having fun (especially when she was younger), and she raised Sophie all by herself and built a hotel called ‘Villa Donna’. I mean like, WOAH some superwoman without a man. Meryl Streep acted super well, I was impressed by her ‘natural acting’ (if there is such a term).
This whole movie is really just about the two of them, mother and daughter.
Most memorable line/ scene: “We danced on the beach, kissed on the beach and dot, dot, dot.” – Sophie, when reading her mother’s diary (Donna’s diary) out loud to her friends.
I was like, ROFLMAO! What a way to describe what happened after that! Dot Dot Dot!!!
“Donna: Welcome also, Sophie's father. He's here.
LOL I was like, HAHA this is so hilarious!
I would recommend it to: Musical lovers and those who like listening to ABBA songs but not major fanatics of ABBA (because I have to admit, some of the songs were not sung up to standard). On the contrary, this may be a romance musical, but I felt the romance was more of the 'rekindled' or 'happened before' then the 'happened in the movie itself' kind of romance, so it was sweet, but even though I like romance movies, I didn't feel that this was a romance movie/musical.
